The Tree of Eliza

The Tree of Eliza is a fictional, plot-driven novel that follows the lives of Eliza Hayne, who died on 7 May 1854, and Ella Wilson, who was born on 7 May 1954.

On the 22 of July 1868, Edward Hayne dies in a harvest field on the hottest day ever recorded in England and now lies in Stonelake graveyard beside his wife and daughter, Eliza. All three are buried facing the oldest yew tree in Sussex. Renowned for its size and age, the tree is over a thousand years old. Locals believe it is a spiritual tree; it is often referred to as the dream tree or the wishing tree.

Diagnosed with cancer in 2004, Ella visits Stonelake graveyard believing that the tree could help her. Like Edward and Eliza before her, she is in awe of the yew and is lured into its hollowed heart where she makes a wish, not realising the full ramifications of doing so.
